Two Great Tastes? That’s What You Think.

You know what I hate about chocolate cake?

Absolutely nothing!

God, I love chocolate cake. I can eat it until I’m sick to my stomach, which doesn’t take much. Chocolate cake is the ultimate emotional roller coaster. One minute I’m moaning in cocoa ecstacy and ten later I’m writhing in bloated misery and caloric guilt. Kinda like sleeping with Count Chocula because he’s an erogenous zone guru, but waking up with a hangover, and pregnant with his spawn. And good luck tracking that bastard down to sue him for child-support, because the Count is a deadbeat dad.

And do I learn my lesson? No, I’m a sucker for a three-layer player and I’ll be snarfing down the next dessert plate that finds its way on my dance card.

I’m not that way with all things chocolate. I don’t like solid chocolate, like kisses, or candy bars. But I like chocolate milk, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate pudding. I like brownies, but not fudge. Fudge is too close to solid chocolate. Does that mean I’m only half of a Hershey whore?

You know what I hate about peanut butter?

Everything.

Even the smell makes me queasy. According to my mother, my aunt baked a tray of peanut butter cookies when I was two years old and she told me I could have as many as I wanted and I did. I haven’t eaten peanut butter (at least on purpose) since. Those criss-cross patterns made with a fork on the cookies? The mark of the devil.

When I was about nine years old, I was served a peanut butter sandwich while staying at a friend’s house. Knowing me, I wouldn’t have dared say anything and forced it down. But I must have repressed the experience because I don’t remember what happened. Maybe I waited for everybody to leave the room and hid it in the garbage. Or shoved it down my pants until I could dispose of it elsewhere.

And yet, I like peanuts. Even chocolate-covered peanuts - peanut M&Ms. But I don’t like plain M&Ms.

Is this because my tastes are refined? Or just fucked up?

In either case, if you get your peanut butter in my chocolate, you can keep it.

I would love it if the doorbell rang now and it was the door-to-door cake salesman. Actually that would be a bit creepy as it’s past midnight. But maybe I could just open the door a crack and he could squish it through.

Wack. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

THANK YOU! I hate peanut butter, the thought of it makes me dry heave. My husband will eat a spoonful of it from the jar and I start to hurl in the corner.

  12. Nana Diaries says:

Blasphemy! Why, the very words “peanut butter” must be spoken in hushed tones, and with reverence fit for a . . . well, peanut butter! Straighten up, there, chocoslut!

    Nanny Goats,
I can’t believe what I’m reading here, after everything we shared. *sniff*
And, by the way, I’ve taken three showers so far and still can’t get the Hershey smears off my spats.
    I feel so…so USED.

P.S. I think I left my monocle under your bed.

Hershey chocolate is absolutely yuk! My ex boss used to come back from the USA every year with a bag for the staff. I used to look at the bag in the office kitchen and be grateful for Thornton’s, Cadbury’s Flake and Whispa bars and Divine chocolate(aptly named).
A slice of Thornton’s Alpini cake is to lust after but one slice is more than enough.
It’s Chocolate Week in the UK! So go out and get some.

The Oldest is one of the unlucky few that has a very nasty food allergy to all things peanut.
I can easily tell him without batting an eye that he’s not missing a damn thing by not being able to have a peanut butter sandwich. But I need a few acting classes before he asks me, “are those peanut butter cups things really THAT good?”
Oh sweet boy - no (but inside I’ll be screaming YES!!!!)

  23. angie says:

OK, my tastes as far as chocolate go are so similar to yours. Don’t care for fudge, but LOVE the chocolate things that you do. I do however like a good dark chocolate nutty piece.
I detest Jiffy type peanut butter but will tolerate the kind with oil in the top that has to be stirred in.
I’m so glad you stopped by. So glad.

  24. * tonya * says:

I love peanut butter on fresh bread, but you know what, peanut butter has no business being anywhere near my chocolate or ice-cream.
I eat chocolate until I’m sick. Why must it be so darn good.

  25. I made myself sick on peanut butter cups once, but I still eat ’em!

  26. ettarose says:

Oh poor thing. I am not a real sweets type person. Peanut butter pie though, is to die for! I also love me some peanut M&M’s!

  27. I can’t take peanut butter mixed with chocolate. Even the thought of it. Wrong on so many levels in my mind. But I know I stand alone.
I’m with you on the chocolate cake thing. Except for the smack talkin’ ’bout the count. I’ve always been a little afraid of him so I’m not going there. I’m not waking up to see him, frank’n and boo peering in my window tonight. I just avoid them completely and even as a child stuck with plain old cornflakes. Wait…maybe that’s why I have 22 chickens in my kitchen…Where was I? Oh, yeah…I want to take a trip back up north just to get my hands on a huge slice of Death by Chocolate from Gregg’s. *drool*

  28. Lynn K. says:

I’ll keep the chocolate and peanut butter. Oh yeah. How do you feel about chocolate covered pretzels????

  29. Jenn says:

*sniffle*sniffle* That’s the sadest thing I’ve ever heard. Chocolate without the peanut butter? hmm..wait a minute, you said I could keep it if your chocolate met my peanut butter. That’s the best thing! Score more chocolate for me! Woohoo!

  30. Preston says:

You are evil Nanny Goats! I love chocolate and peanut butter. What about the beloved Tandykakes? And don’t tell me you can’t get Tastykakes where you live cause I don’t wanna here it. I need a moment, but I’ll get over it… (oh and thanks for the SITS post. I think they’re gonna let me in)

  31. Laughing outloud at the criss cross marks of the devil! You’re funny.

  32. Aubrey says:

I love me some chocolate cake, right out of the oven, no frosting. LOVE. When I was pregnant with my last baby, I had to have a chocolate chocolate chip muffin at least 2x daily.
And peanut butter? Well…let’s just say about now, I could go for some Jiffy on a plain piece of bread. Yep.

  33. Wow. I was with you until you started picking on peanut butter. My favorite sweet of all is Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream… big peanut butter cups in peanut butter ice cream… Yummy.

  34. Becky says:

I am the same way with chocolate. And I hate peanut butter, UNLESS it’s with chocolate. I’m wierd like that. It’s the only way I can enjoy peanut butter. I think it was because my mom made me eat to many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches growing up. I like nothing peanut, peanut butter or alike. Unless it’s in chocolate. I love me some reeses peanut butter cups and little reeses candies. :-)

  35. Di says:

I vote for your taste buds are refined… I like chocolate candy, but not chocolate ice cream. Love chocolate cake but not wild about a chocolate pie. I’ve begun to think it’s a texture thing…. sometimes the texture just sets off my gag reflex…. sort of like tomatoes… love them in a bowl of chili, but alone and there goes the gag reflex.

  36. Mamasphere says:

Have you had the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate shavings from Costco? PURE HEAVEN. When I was pregnant, I once ate that cake for two days straight, and nothing else. Except milk.

  37. You’re weird. But, lucky for you. I won’t hold that against you.
I love bananas. But so help me God, or so help you God, if anything banana flavored comes near me.
Cherries? Can’t stand ’em. Not even the flavor. *wretch*
Chocolate cake? Devil’s Food, you say? Move out of the way and no one gets hurt.

  38. Jan says:

    You are so lovably schizoid.
Keep your cake - I can barely eat it, but 10 years of being a professional cake decorator will do that to you.
Pie, on the other hand? CHOCOLATE PIE?
Oh, honey, just sign me up for the Hershey’s Chocolate Chicken Ranch.

  43. Chris Wood says:

Yes, chocolate cake. It doesn’t exactly stink.

  44. Tabitha Blue says:

Haha, this post is too funny!!!! Had me laughing through till the end. I’m your twin half a Hershy whore. I like the same and dislike the same as it pertains to chocolate.
And, like all twins, we disagree at some point… how can you not like peanut butter!! :)
Great post!! See you again soon!
    ~Tabitha~

  45. Jenn Thorson says:

I’m glad I now know the best way to get chocolate off you- contaminate it with peanut butter. Yee-haw! And I do loves me some peanut buttery goodness!
You are indeed a lady of contrasts, NannyGoats.

  46. Melizzard says:

Finally someone who has more complicated issues with the Peanut Chocolate combo than I do.

  47. Amy Kay says:

Thanks for visiting my blog yesterday. That blog-a-thon was a blast. Two things I really like right now are milk chocolate covered raisins, and dark chocolate covered soy nuts from South Beach Diet.
    Hugs, Amy 😉

  48. Carrie says:

Send…peanut…butter…my…way…I will be the other half of your Hershey Whore.
I can’t hardly keep it in my house without my husband sneaking off with the jar (don’t ask-it’s ugly).

  49. MammaDucky says:

Perhaps you don’t like solid chocolate because you’ve been eating Hershey, EWWW! Behold the wonder of European chocolates. They are a brazillion times better. Odd that you wrote this as I JUST came across an ab fab recipe for chocolate cake with peanutbutter cream cheese icing. Yum.

  50. HeatherPride says:

WOW, I totally never knew that the criss-cross fork imprints were the mark of the DEVIL!!! So that’s what’s up with all those “PTA” moms…..I’m on to them now….

  51. black betty says:

damn, girl…you just made me super hungry. i LURV me chocrate mirk…yummy to my tummy!!! guess i’ll have to go get some at lunch now… :)

  52. Hubby and son are peanut butter addicts, they put it on everything. I try to appease - made 6 dozen peanut butter cookies last xmas for them - even with that mark of the devil criss-cross! Yikes!
I understand your chocolate thing with liking some and not the other. It’s a texture thing - I am the same way with lots of foods and textures and hubby doesn’t get it and calls me freaky.

  53. Amanda K says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hello! I love meeting new friends and seeing new blogs!! I love, love, love chocolate… now I want some…great! I love chocoalte with peanuts becuase I love that tiny bit of salt… YUM!!

  54. Tricia says:

Well, if you are ever in need of another half Hershey whore to keep you company, I’m your girl. I feel exactly the same way about chocolate cake and solid chocolates.
I had an experience similar to your over-indulgence of peanut butter and subsequent aversion, but it was with tequila…

  55. gingela5 says:

Peanut butter is so good! But I understand. If you don’t like something, you don’t like it! I don’t like Chinese and people try to force me to like it! I’m with you on fudge though! yuck

  56. zenmom says:

Oh no! Peanut butter and chocolate is mana from heaven! You know I love you NGIP, but this just breaks the heart! I have to go drown my sorrows in a Reese’s Cup.

  57. Hollie says:

I feel the same way about Brownies. They just make me happy. Peanut Butter optional.

  58. MJ says:

LOL. I like both and can scarf down quite a few Reese’s cups. I just picked up a box of new peanut butter whoppers from the store yesterday.
Right now, candy corn is my downfall. I love the stuff, especially if it’s fresh. I have a hidden stash at my desk.

  59. Dr. Wifey says:

i’m sitting here eating Reese’s PB cup right now! the best of both worlds :)
thanks for visiting my blog yesterday! have a great day, SITSta!
