Crock Pots, and Other Reasons for Living

30 Minus 2 Days of Writing Challenge
Day 19: Tastes Like Chicken

crock potHow have I lived, lo these many years, without the knowledge and power of the wonder that is the slow cooker, the almighty Crock Pot?

I have fought and fought and fought some more with various protein animal products with less than zero success and ultimately limited my repertoire because most meat comes out hard and dry and yucky and blecky and other similar adjectives and I figured I just didn’t have the knack for it and recently came to realize you all have been cheating. Consider yourselves on my poop list.

And never have I been more happy to cheat than through the discovery of this cook’s best friend. Oh my lord, the tender fall apart heaven that comes out of these things six to eight hours later. I’m cooking again with gusto and beef broth and low heat and Pinterest.

And I’ve been cooking everything now, from the oxymoronic pork butt shoulder, to neighborhood stray cats to local road kill (because eating local means organic and pesticide-free and you know where it came from and who knew skunk could be fall-apart scrumptious?).

And don’t get me started on all variations of backyard snakes. Those slithering nuggets of deliciousnessability.

I can’t believe you guys didn’t tell about this culinary magic before. Shame on you.

  1. I always did like me some fine pork butt. Skunk butt, not so much.

  2. “I’m cooking again with gusto and beef broth and low heat and Pinterest.”

Good for you, Margaret! That is awesome!

  3. Oh yes, Crock Pots are a lifesaver in my kitchen. Glad you’re rockin’ yours.

So when you brag that your meat was “free range” …you are really saying it was backyard critters. I too love the Crock Pot as an appliance but I typically use it to make less exotic dishes than skunk or snake. I now am feeling very dull and far less adventuresome than you.

    1. Margaret says:

Mmm, I like the sound of that….backyard critter stew. 🙂

  5. Katy Bug says:

I am so sorry I never told you about crock pots. You have forced me to face my horribleness, and it is ugly indeed. I must spread the crock pot gospel!

    1. Margaret says:

I forgive you Katy Bug. THIS time.

      🙂

You’re really a vegan aren’t you? Sometimes we stand in department store aisles and stare longingly at crock pots but they never seem to reciprocate and so we have only one that was given to us a gift many years ago and it stays stored in the basement with other cookware that does not seem to love us as much as we would like. The one downstairs is now so old we will have to retire it and it has probably only been used a couple of times. Now because you wrote so eloquently of cooked skunk we are going to have to go out and buy a crock pot that, no doubt, will love us less than the one we now own. Rattlesnake and alligator and turtle are good. I always drew the line at raccoon, possum and skunk. Skunk is best if you prefer to eat alone.

    1. Margaret says:

When it comes to crock pots, Ben, one must accept the notion of unrequited love.

  7. Any time you want to come down here and score yourself some gophers, you’re more than welcome. But if I visit you, I think I’ll stick with salad.

    1. Margaret says:

What, you don’t like skunk? What’s the matter with you?

  8. Jack says:

Where did you fine organic skunk? Mine are always hopped up on steroids and antibiotics.

    1. Margaret says:

      Two words, Jack: Whole Foods.

  9. mike says:

Oh, I know what that is and I love it. Looks fantastic.

    1. Margaret says:

Dang, you figured out it was rhino? Well, good for you. Nobody else has figure it out yet, though, so “Shhhhhhh!”

  10. Linda says:

That looks yummy! And it reminds me I should use mine crock pot more often.

    1. Margaret says:

Mine was Heaven sent, I’m sure of it. 🙂

  11. Nicky says:

Personally, I would love your skunk recipe because mine always turns out really dry even in the crock pot with beef broth and so I end up mincing it and throwing it into some tomato sauce which, of course, just kills the wonderful aroma. So sad. Sigh. So, yes, please share your recipe. Thanks!

    1. Margaret says:

just do a search on Pinterest for “crock pot stink” and you’ll get oodles of them, Nicky.

  12. Katherine says:

Actually I tend to have dry meat with my crock pot… you need to tell me the secret!!!

    1. Margaret says:

Do you throw a towel in with yours? I did that and it didn’t take long to figure out what caused the dryness.

      1. Katherine says:

No towel.. but a sponge? Not good?

I didn’t want you to miss this since you are featured…

        🙂 It’s long though…. VERY long!

  13. We both did snakes today. More great minds!

    Cats. Shame on you. 😉

    1. Margaret says:

Ha! Even if they’re “bad” kitties?

  14. nonamedufus says:

And I came over here today thinking you were gonna tell us goat tastes like chicken.

    1. Margaret says:

ha! Well now THAT would have been too easy.

  15. The publicist has been known to crock the pot. She says that goat is especially good in….WHAT?!

  16. You are pulling our legs with that pulled pork!

    1. Margaret says:

You mean you didn’t think that was shredded snake? 😉
