I know!
My original idea was to have a simple Twitter handle necklace. But since North (a local silver jewelry designer) can make just about anything, I thought “Hey, what about a goat?” And what about my blog name?
And the next thing you know, I’ve got this rockin’ necklace adorning my neck.
They use the old-school process of lost wax casting, so each piece is hand-made, unique, and a piece of art. Like little mini sculptures.
North has her own own designs displayed on their site, or she can custom design something for you.

1. I really wanted to win the Trevor Project necklace because, when I grow up, I want to be just like Margaret.
I love the necklace. I tweeted and liked on Facebook, but even if I don’t win…well, I’ll buy one, just the same to give to my niece.
She’s a great kid. She’s one of the kindest, most decent people I know. And she’s only 13.A few years ago, when she was in the fifth grade or so, one of her classmates brought in a stuffed animal for a school project where the kids were supposed to share something that was important to them. The boy was mocked by his classmates, who thought that it was baby-ish to have an attachment to a stuffed animal. My niece saw how the kids responded to him, and so, the next day, when it was her turn to share with the class, she brought her “blankie” from when she was little. She didn’t tell anyone she was doing it. She didn’t discuss it with her mom beforehand. In fact, no one knew that she’d done that until the teacher mentioned it weeks later at a parent-teacher conference. That’s the kind of person she is.Then, just two weeks ago, when I got married (to another dude, no less), she was the most enthusiastic and supportive guest we had at our wedding. When her (less than supportive) dad suggested that she shouldn’t miss school to travel to New York for a gay wedding, she told him that she wouldn’t miss our wedding for the world. She came, and she read a beautiful passage as part of the ceremony, and I love it that you’re giving away a piece of jewelry that’s so meaningful and important. And beautiful.Thanks for everything that Nanny Goats and Jewelry by North are doing to make the world a kinder, happier and more loving place. You guys rock. Seriously!

Okay. It’s official. If I win, give the necklace to Thomas’ niece. I know what it’s like to witness truly altruistism coming purely from the heart of a child. Once we went to a outdoor concert. A group of developmentally disabled people were dancing up front. A woman went to their caregiver and demanded that they be made to sit down because they were a distraction. The small crowd objected to her objections. The father of a disabled son got very upset, grabbed his lawn chair and left. After a vigorous debate, the woman relented, and embarrassed, went back to her seat. No one danced. Although the people were very disabled, they understood enough that no one got back up to dance. My (then) 8 year old daughter, excruciatingly shy, without one word, got up, went up front before the whole crowd, grabbed the hand of one of the people and pulled them back out. She was beet red, but she danced determinedly, and he danced with her. Then another danced. And another. When they were up and dancing once again, my daughter came back and sat with me, and leaned against my shoulder and cried because everyone was looking at her.
What a beautiful story. Thanks so much for sharing. Your daughter sounds like a really great kid. You must be incredibly proud of her!
Gosh, Debby. You brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat with that. What an incredible and incredibly moving story. And I thought that kind of stuff only happened in movies.

Project Necklace…” Well, I guess I got home just in time! You see (and I know you use one of those services that picks winners at random from a pool of people so this isn’t an effort to garner favor…), I have been at the University of Michigan hospital for over 4 weeks and totally escaped by the skin of my teeth. They weren’t going to let me come home because, well, there weren’t any ramps installed at my apartment. My brother-in-law Kelly built some temporary ones for me but that wasn’t good enough. Long story short, I had some sort of “fistula” (Google is your friend) problem in my back starting on July 4th which was causing me to have episodes where I couldn’t use my legs at all (more so than what happened 10 years ago in a fall where I landed on a small rock smack dab on my L1 vertebra). Over time, it got worse and worse. I started using a cane but soon had a talk with my wife where I said that I thought it best if I not drive or go out by myself. Anyhoo, they did an angiogram on Sep 29th and basically just explored without doing anything to actually fix me. They were to do that (via “embolization”) during the next procedure. My wife and I began calling two weeks later to find out when that would be and were shocked to discover that it was scheduled for Nov. 17th. No amount of telling them how I was still slowly going down hill would get them to alter the date. “Scheduling is, um, kind of out of our hands…” Well, I finally collapsed again for the last time on Oct. 22nd, took an ambulance ride in to the hospital, and, lo and behold, they embolized the next day. They did a follow up on the following Thursday and finished up a couple of minor spots. SO……..
While I’m quite a bit mad at how this all went down (I should have walked out of that hospital…not rolled…any body have any lawyer advice?) I love that Trevor Project necklace by Jewelry by North, what it stands for and the message it conveys. The people there seem to have good hearts and you can see that through the things they create.
Take care all and I apologize for the long sad story. I’m just now getting strong enough (mentally and physically) after being home to tell this tale to the various people I know. Really, everyone take care and have a wonderful holiday (if you celebrate it) and really take the time to be thankful for whatever it is you have; both small and great. 🙂
