Distractions on a Manhattan Sidewalk

Have you ever walked behind a person, let’s say it’s a chick, and she’s got some distracting element about her and your mind is now occupied with nothing but the pesky needling of that distraction for the whole three or four blocks you’re stuck following her, which is helpful in some ways because it does pass the time in this sweltering humidity.

And then you take a picture of her because you figure hey, you have a blog, you can tell everyone else about this THING you saw and you can even feel better about yourself because you’ve been staring at and judging this person for a good five minutes, but your readers will validate you. Or vilify you; their choice, I suppose.

So anyway, I was walking down the street the other day (Fifth Avenue in New York City near the NY Public Library, if you must know) and I get stuck walking behind this:

NYC girl pink headphones

In public. On a pedestrian-laden sidewalk.

And I’m sure you’re thinking the same thing I did, which was…

Where in the holy heck did she get pink headphones?? Right?

  1. I am always so worried that I’ll get caught taking a picture of the weirdos because I got caught once. But I still keep trying… I will post when I do. 🙂

    1. Oh gosh, I’ve been lucky so far. I’m getting a little too bold sometimes though, so someday somebody is bound to knock my block off.

Of course, that will make a good blog post too.

  2. Oooo, I don’t suppose you have pictures? 🙂

  3. The funniest thing is that the headphones WERE the thing that I thought was the funniest looking thing about her outfit. But, that is only because I live in central FL right near Disney World and we have the WEIRDEST dressed people here. It is hot and people from all over the world come here. You should see what some of these people wear to Disney… SCARY!!

  4. Of course you do, Ms. Pinky!

  5. Yourpalpinki says:

OMG I do want those headphones! : ) LOL

  6. Lanita Moss says:

And in the exact shade to match her shirt…with the coordinating white flip flops/purse and shorts. How chic.

  7. Ruth says:

Okay, maybe it's just because I've been spending a lot of time at the pool lately, but for real, the main thing I noticed was her headphones.

    1. Well it all depends. Just how much chlorinated pool water are you drinking?

      1. Ruth says:

I suppose I should have been more specific, I just meant that people wear less clothing than that at the pool.

Also, I just had this insight: think how camera phones have changed our lives. Because I'd never pull out my Kodak and snap a photo of the person in front of me. But with a camera, I wouldn't think twice about it.

  8. Ginger says:

What a 'cheeky' girl. Bet she headphone coordinates all her 'outfits'!

    1. Either that or she ALWAYS wears pink! 🙂

  9. She was on the way to her job at Scores.

    1. I'm not sure I'm familiar with Scores, although I'm guessing it's a Sports Bar Meets Hooters sort of thing? Is the food just as “good” as Hooters?

  10. scott_free says:

All hail Nanny, one who is always too brave to let the fact that a few people might stare at her oddly ever, EVER stop her.

    1. 'specially you boys! I gotta keep my male readers entertained and you can only handle hearing about my girlie problems for so long. Every once in a while I gotta bring out the skin.

      1. scott_free says:

Yep, from these comments it looks like your male readers are more than mollified. 😉

  11. Jayne says:

Well, she may lack taste, but no one can accuse her of lacking confidence. And to think that Californians get a bad rap.

    1. Seriously! I'm always torn whether to respect or dis these people.

      1. Jayne says:

Oh, you gotta dis them. Confidence does not make up for stupidity. Bush was proof of that.

  12. Nezzy says:

Shock my modesty and paint my face red, that was me! Heeehehehehe….nope not really. I fear I would have offered her a scarf to cover 'them cheeks'! :o)

Ya'll have a wonderfully bless day…..do ya feel me blushin'????

    1. I was wondering why the temperature over here rose a bit. Now I know! 🙂

  13. Liz says:

actually, i was thinking if that was britney spears?!?!

    1. Let's just say it was. I never saw her face, so who's to say it wasn't Britney?

      1. Liz says:

She was enough of a wreck, had short enough shorts AND bleached hair…she
        fits all the Britney requirements.

  14. Oh yes, I must have those headphones!

  15. Jennifer says:

That is so funny! I did not know people even wore headphones like that anymore. But wait, they were on a chick in a crop top and itty bitty shorts. Circa 1990, I'm guessing!!! LOL….

  16. I think she looks really cute, Margaret. Except for the hair.

    1. I never said she wasn't cute. Did I say she wasn't cute? I just wanted to know where she got her headphones is all.

That, and her butt is hanging out of her shorts. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

      1. Oh Margaret. She got those at Radio Shack! I especially like the way the shorts are cut so nice and high and I bet they are a really cool material like polyester. Very comfy! But that girl's pony tail has so many split ends I got distracted.

  17. CatLadyLarew says:

I wonder if she has headphones to match all her outfits…

  18. moooooog35 says:

I have no idea where she got the headphones.

I should find her and ask her.

  19. SFChick says:

She probably wonders why no one takes her seriously…Who could when you walk around with a wedgie like that? I'm uncomfortable just looking at it!

    1. Ha! Good point. Although If you're already wearing a thong, I suppose a double wedgie doesn't make much difference.

  20. Kate says:

    fellow Blogher participant??

    1. Probably. On her way to the posh and swag-filled Pink Skull Candy party, no doubt.

  21. KINGOFNEWYORKHACKS says:

Un-F'in-believable…That lady on the right wearing a WHITE hat with a PURPLE shirt…WTF , is there any sense of fashion these days ?!?!?! However, that girl in the pink got in my cab for a story to be told later… chicka pow pow !! LMAO

    1. I know, right? What are people thinking? I mean this is New York, ladies! Show some sense of proper fashion.

The next time I see you, I want to hear all about the girl in pink and your cab.

  22. I do the same thing, only it's with people who wear flip-flops on the NYC Subway. It's completely disgusting. No one wants to see your feet, for one thing. And, when you consider that your most 'comfortable' flip flops are worn down to street level because you pronate when you walk, and you haven't replaced those damned flip-flops in years because they're “comfortable” — i.e. used to your pronation — and then you get on the freakin' subway! I mean, the SUBWAY! Where people do a number two on the platform without even thinking twice, and you'd be lucky if it were a healthy, well-formed number two, at that! And your big toe is dangling over the side of your thong sandal and …

… oh. I gotta stop. I just threw up in my mouth a little, I think.

My point is, I've been known to take pictures of horrible criminal injustices that are visited upon me by people in NYC, and then blog about it. Because I'm a horrible person, that's why.

    1. OK, I've seen you go off about flip-flops before on the subway so I will not tell you that I wore sandals on the subway when I was there a couple of weeks ago (unless that's different somehow), but I will ask you are you supposed to wear shoes and socks in the 100+ below-ground sauna or what? I mean it was frickin' AITCH OH TEE when I was there. (and I did not take the subway prior to our tea date because it was so close to the hotel.)

However there are 2 things I must also mention.
      1. I do gross out, oddly, at the thought of walking around in sandals on the streets of NYC because it seems really dirty walking around.
      2. Maybe it was actually the subway that gave me that feeling.
      3. OK, actually I have three. If it's by sheer luck that people provide well-formed poops and therefore most of the time, it's only occasionally, then that alone will stop me from ever wearing open-toed anything again in NYC subway platforms.

  23. Lisa says:

I see that in Maine every day. Just more flannel.

    1. Hey, wow, look at that. You signed in with your Yahoo Pulse account. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that before. You trendsetter, you.

And seriously? Flannel short shorts? Ugh.

      1. OK, I just noticed that Kristen above also logged in with Yahoo Pulse. Is everybody migrating over there now? Some new trend I'm not aware of?

  24. Nicky says:

Did you ask her? Oh, please tell me you asked her!

    1. I must have fiddled with my camera too much because the second I looked up again…she was gone – POOF!!

  25. Kristin says:

    Oh how I miss NYC.

    1. Granted, it was hot in NYC, but still. The rest of us kept our clothes on. For the most part.

Did you use to live there?

  26. Pricilla says:

What?! And she had no herd?
    I can't imagine why.
Most bucks I know would ….nevermind

    1. Perhaps the bucks in NYC play for a different team and would simply approach her and ask her where she got her pink stuff.
