Counting Crows (and Dead Celebrities)

I saw a crow on our roof a couple of weeks ago and my husband told me it was a sign that someone was going to die. Because he is Mr. Positive. And because he was having a tonsillectomy the next day.

So I took a really crappy picture of the crow and followed-up on this death thing.

crow on roof

See? I told you it was a crappy picture. You can’t even tell it’s a crow, can you? For all you know, it’s a duck.

Turns out crows are indeed the subject ofย  many superstitions. Ever hear the saying, “A crow on the thatch, soon death lifts the latch”?

Yeah, me neither.

The superstition depends on the quantity of crows on your “thatch”. You must count your crows before going off half-cocked about which doom scenario lies ahead. A single crow seems to be bad news no matter who your source is. And while nobody died in my house since the appearance of the dreaded black bird, the entertainment world has sure had its share, what with Ronnie James Dio, Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper, Rue McClanahan, and even Brittany Murphy’s husband.

Now I’m not one to blame the crow for any of this because I am not superstitious. But if your husband is scheduled for a tonsillectomy tomorrow, don’t look up today if you can help it. And if you do look up, make sure you use the flash.

Bless Counting Crows for this song. I keep in mind being in my high school wood shop listening a San Fran radio station when I heard the news that Richard Manuel had shot himself. I agree with everything Duritz says here.

  2. It looks like a construction paper cut out of a crow. If so, you have done an excellent and artistic job.

    1. Oh why thank you. Thank you very much. I spent all night on that thing. I'm glad SOMEBODY picked up on it.

  3. Cheri Pryor says:

I guess Mr. Mudpuppy has no reason to be hatin' on the crows anymore. He survived.

    Congrats to your winner!!!

    1. It's true. He is indeed still alive. Maybe a raccoon died underneath the deck or something.

  4. Oh, I hope everything went well with your husband?!

    1. He's doing mostly very well, Meleah, thanks for asking!

    this is some blog ….

    1. That's a complement, right? Is that a complement? I'm gonna take that as a compliment.

I thought the bird had to be in your house to represent someone dying.

    1. So you knew about this crow thing too? I had never heard it before, but there's this whole crow fortune table laid out and categorized by the number of crows that you see.

  7. RonnieC says:

Ok, this is soooooooo weird because I have you on my google reader to see whenever you post, and yet for the past two weeks I haven't seen ANY posts from you. And then tonight I checked my reader and saw 20!!!!!!! Did you change your feed or something? I can't understand why this happened.

Anyway, I'm so sorry for not stopping by sooner. I hope you forgive me?

Listen, don't worry about bad luck with crows because I happen to LOVE crows and they have always brought me GOOD luck. I mean it!

    1. Oh, bless you Ronnie! Yes I switched to WordPress and lost many feed subscribers because of it. The feed URL changed and therefore no longer updated in people's Google Readers unless they removed me and added me back in (and why the hell would they do that?) You're the 2nd person to tell me this, so I'm hoping that a little trick I tried today (after agonizing over it for 2 weeks) will bring everyone back.

  8. All of a sudden 20 of your blog posts just popped up in my reader – what happened? And here I thought you just weren't posting. Did you just switch hosts or domains?? Sorry for my lack of comments, it's not my fault really it isn't. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Wooo hoooo!!!!!!
Yes, I switched from Blogger to WordPress and have been agonizing over losing most of my feedburner subscribers and couldn't figure out how to get them back, or even if it was possible. I tried another tactic today and I'm hoping the fact that my posts popped up in your reader means that it worked. I'll know for sure if and when my feedburner count goes back up by about 734 subscribers. *crossing fingers*

Well sitting here with the iPod within reach, this post has resulted in “Round Here” and “Mr. Jones” being dialed up so we thank you for that.

    1. HA! You are most welcome.

  10. Nicky says:

Ah, I see you have never heard the old expression “A single crow, the tonsils must go”. That's all it meant. And the tonsils went. The crow should leave you alone now. Unless you still have your tonsils…?

    1. Ah, Nicky, have I told you how much I love you?

      Whaddya mean we just met????

      1. Nicky says:

No, no I don't believe you have. Ah, we may have only known each other a short time but everyone knows that virtual time is kinda like “dog years”. But that is besides the point. Please feel free to expound on the gloriousness that is me….

  11. mommiecooks says:

Good luck to your husband tomorrow. I'm sure it will all go well for him.

A congrats to the winner as well! I wish I had known about your blog sooner, I would have loved to put in for that giveaway. Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's nice to meet you!

  12. Oh man, your advice column is about me isn't it? Okay, tell the truth, who ratted me out?

    1. I ain't no squealer! You'll never get it outta me. OK, it was JD.

  13. Congratulations on the giveaways– winning and giving!

And that crow thing– kinda scary since we get about 100 of them every single night around 6pm. They swoop in and land in a big tree in the back yard. But I won't look at them in honor of your hubby's surgery– Which I hope goes VERY well.

    Cheers,
    jj

    1. 100 crows might be lucky. 100 crows sounds like a name for something. A rock band. A book title.

  14. Shar says:

Congrats to the tomato girl winner!

As for the crow pic, I know a duck when I see it and that's definitely a crow. Glad the tonsillectomy went ok, no thanks to the crow.

    1. There seems to be some debate about whether or not it's a duck. Are you sure it's not a duck?

  15. Congrats to Lynn!!

You heard my story about the crow right? On FB? I think if you see an owl at night it means someone is gonna die. Crow is supposed to be “good medicine” but not sure about it if they drop dead right in front of you…like mine did!

    1. I don't know if this will make you happy or sad, but she heard about the giveaway from you. ๐Ÿ™‚ And your own personal crow story is downright creepy!

  16. Good luck to your husband. I wouldn't worry about that crow. Because it's clearly a duck. And ducks bring good luck. Why else would they be called ducks?

    1. I'm so glad you said it was a duck. I'd hate to think I risked my life (a la Tippi Hedren) taking a silly picture.

  17. Cashier says:

Crows scare me. I don't like them. ๐Ÿ™

    1. I just kept assuming it was going to dive bomb me at any moment. I wonder if Tippi Hedren had anything to do with that.

  18. Jayne says:

Sending good wishes to you and your husband for an easy surgery and quick recovery.

The worst thing our crows do is steal the chicken eggs.

    1. All right that's it. I gotta update my post somehow so it's clearer that the hubby had surgery almost two weeks ago. However, your well wishes are graciously taken and I thank you.

  19. tattytiara says:

I wonder who crows spent their time dooming before humans started building roofs?

    1. Perhaps the cave art out there will tell us. You know, like cavemen painters probably drew crows on their walls dooming the dinosaurs or something. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. “The Crow” starring Brandon Lee was a cool movie, but ominous. Look what happened to him, AND his dad.

    1. Eek! Good point. (NOTE TO SELF: Do not embark on martial arts action movie career)

  21. Actually in India if you see a crow sitting on your house..it means that you will have guests coming over soon. Also, in Hindu religion, during the funeral rites a crow is considered as your ancestor and he is given some offering of rice and if he eats it…the soul of the dead person is released from the cycle of birth and death and he achieves 'Moksha' or 'Nirvana'.

    1. Oh, I like yours better. Can I convert now or is it too late?

  22. Pricilla says:

Hmmm, I must be doomed. We have crows everywhere out here.
    Ravens too.

    1. No, lots of crows are good. Well, lots meaning 3 or 4 or 5 which mean wealth and health and other good stuff. It's the single crow that's bad news.

  23. Erin says:

Are you sure it's not a raven? Cuz that opens a whole other can of worms.

    1. I hope it wasn't a raven. I coulda busted out my Poe quotes.

  24. Good luck to your husband and his tonsils. I see crows all the time and they always make me think of The Stand by Stephen King, and then I get a little nervous.

    1. Actually, I didn't make it very clear but the husband had his tonsillectomy a couple of weeks ago, but it was the day after he saw a crow on the roof.

  25. britt says:

Good luck to the huz tomorrow! Birds get tired too, and a roof is a handy resting spot, but if one flies into your window your DOOMED!

    1. Actually, I didn't make it very clear but the huz had his tonsillectomy a couple of weeks ago, but it was the day after he saw a crow on the roof.

      1. britt says:

YAY for reading comprehension skills! I'm glad he survived.

  26. JunkDrawer says:

Wishing your husband good luck tomorrow! I passed a crow on my walk this morning. He was in the street munching on something dead. I think that's a good sign. Crows with full bellies are bringers of good luck. It's the starving and angry ones you have to watch out for.

    1. Oops – I guess I didn't word that very well. We saw the bird the day before his surgery which was last week. But thanks!
