Retro Desserts: There’s a Cake For That

When you’re looking for a real hot and romantic night on the town with your Significant O, your first thought is probably: teenage birthday parties in the suburbs! Right? I know mine is.

I don’t have kids, so I’m totally out of touch with what’s hip and trendy and phat and sick and yo and dope and whatever is the kids are saying these days. Turns out not much has changed since I was a youngin’ in the 1980s. What a relief we felt when we discovered at a recent suburban teenage birthday party that kids are still observing at the Altar of Ms. Pac-Man even though we’re living in a brand new decade, century, and millenium:

Ms. Pac-Man birthday cake
A birthday cake

Is the theme music ringing in your head? The one that sounds like: “wokka wokka wokka wokka”.

And then there is Red Velvet Cake. Oh. My. God. I don’t know if you remember the menstrual-fest that was Steel Magnolias in the late 80s where an Armadillo red velvet cake was featured, but you MUST have some red velvet cake before you die. I don’t even have to tell you this if you’re from “The South” (in the U.S.), as you were probably spoon fed the Red as a baby.

And if you really want to get ridiculous about it, try the Red Velvet Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. You can share this with your friends, but you need to act fast if you want to get a picture of it. The photo below was taken 2.4 nanoseconds after the plate was placed in front of us where I began fork-stabbing the hands of my tablemates.

So my question to you is, what do you miss from the 1980s? Because…yeah, there’s a cake for that.

What I miss from the 80's? 1) My big-ass hair that was both permed AND highlighted, B) my thin thighs and perky breasts and III) all the fun (naughty) things the above mentioned items allowed me to experience.

What don't I miss from the 80's???? The music, big hair, the leggings with big tops, the music, Frankie saying “Relax”, shoulder pads, the music, the clean cut “Preppy” look, my body, the music……

  • buggys

From the eighties I miss the music, my babies, leg warmers (yes), not the starched hair though. My old body, I'd like to revisit that, it took up much less space than my current one.
Red velvet cake, please, always on the top of my list maybe that's why I have a new body!

  • annsrants

My husband loves red velvet cake–it's their family favorite.

To me it tastes like nothing and a lot of sugar. Sephora just gave me a sample of –get this–red velvet cake body wash.

What possessed me to smell it, I don't know. Gaggggggg.

  • http://mightymfamily.blogspot.com Mighty M Family

I haven't had much red velvet – but what little I have had has been delicious!

I love the Pac Man cake. Just add a little Donkey Kong or Mario Brother and it would be a full meal cake deal.

Uh, I had 80's hair so that would be a… NO. But I gotta try the red velvet cheesecake. It looks like a evening on the couch with your man in front of the fire type of dessert.

  • mommytime

Big hair and legwarmers cake? Lopsided earrings cake? Oh, how delish!

  • scott_free

I've had Red Velvet before–but Red Velvet Cheesecake?
No. No, I'm sorry. I think I would die and go to heaven, and I'm just not ready for that yet.

  • http://reluctantpatriot.blogspot.com/ Sparky

Yeah, I miss the cake, the fashions, the music (early '80s only), the President! The list is endless. We need a Way Back Machine for that. :)

  • http://injaynesworld.blogspot.com/ Jayne

What I miss most about the 80s are my arms. I had great arms… Oh, and not having to pee 55 times a day was good, too. May I have my cake now, please?

The 80's are retro??? Am I getting old, or have you slipped a cog?? Either way, don't answer that…

  • rootietoot

Red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Yum.
I don't know of anything I miss from the 80's, except maybe the general horniness of being in my 20's.

  • http://www.sparklecat.com/ Janiss

I DID the 1980s so well and so fabulously that I miss absolutely NOTHING – anything worthwhile from the era I took with me into the 1990s and beyond. In fact, my fiance was in a platinum-selling 1980s hair band… and they STILL do sellout business in Maryland and points beyond. So yeah, I don't miss the 1980s because I still have 'em.

    • MrMudPuppy

      Could that be Kix?

      • http://www.sparklecat.com/ Janiss

        Yes it would!

  • http://www.maturelandscaping.com/ Nance

They make Jon Bon Jovi Cake? Really?? Let's see, that would be blonde cake with mocha icing and a blue band around the…hmmm. Just send me the recipe and I'll take it from there.

  • http://www.redheadranting.com/ redheadranting

I had my first red velvet cake last October, and then again in January. I might have to go out and pick one up this weekend.

What I miss most about the 80's is my waist size.

  • http://idothings.info JD at I Do Things

Shoot. I didn't know there was red velvet cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory. I'm on my way. A nearby bakery makes red velvet DONUTS and ohmygod they are so, so good.

Can anyone here confirm or deny that “real” red velvet cake is actually something other than just devil's food cake dyed red? I brought this up at a get-together recently, and someone insisted there's a whole bottle of vinegar in real red velvet cake.

    Really?

    • http://www.nannygoatsinpanties.com/ Margaret (nannygoats)

A WHOLE bottle of vinegar? ACK!

That Red Velvet Cheesecake looks heavenly… OMG, I want it NOW!!
The only thing I miss from the 80s is my size 6 jeans! And if I continue to eat cake, I'll NEVER see them again!!
