Excuse me? Who the hell do you think you are? Ignorant haole. I happen to be a Hawaiian. And if you think for one second that us Hawaiians do not use our native tongue, you better think twice. It's disrespectful how you say stupid shit like that and think that no Hawaiians will read it. Guess again. We do use our native tongue when you idiot haoles aren't around. We use it in our every day lives. And if it wasn't for those damn HAOLE missionaries that came and over threw the Hawaiians monarchy, we'd still be speaking our native language. Little do you know about the culture of Hawaii and how much we had to give up. Little do any of you haoles know. And if you think that Hawaii is the only state whose economy is bad, you better realize, that ever since things began to go down, this entire population of AME-RICANS started going down a shit hole. Hawaii is not sinister. And nor is Hawaii desperate for your dirty ass money. If you didn't like your stay here in Hawaii than fuck off. It's your point of view, not others. And what you THINK oh Hawaii, HAH! You idiot. That's what you think. Unless you go to the right places and experience the real culture of this place. Than shut the fuck up. It's people like you that STOLE the land from the Hawaiians. I don't care who you are or what you represent. But you are the most disrespectful person on earth. To go and talk shit about the Hawaiian culture.

So let me give you a very brief lesson on the Hawaiian culture.
Back in the days of King Kamehameha, life was good. Simple. He conquered all the islands and brought them together. Than that idiot captain cook came along bringing all these diseases, killing the Hawaiian culture. Than the missionaries came along, restricting the Hawaiians from doing the many things they used to do in their normal lives. They sent the Hawaiians to school, to learn ENGLISH. Thus, the reason being why we speak the language now. Eventually the missionaries pushed the Hawaiians towards believing in Christianity. Even when our Queen was on her throne, being threatened to give up her kingdom, and people (which you haoles are responsible of) was she speaking not only English, but HAWAIIAN as well. She than, forcefully gave up her reign and stepped down from the throne. LEAVING her people to deal with you idiots.

Yeah, you damn white people had it easy. Go to war here, go to war there. But you didn't experience the things that the Hawaiians had to go through. Dealing with you dumb fucks. Us Hawaiians are nothing close to normal. Don't compare us to you people.

My experience on Maui was much different than what you speak of here...but we spent a week in Hana first, then Kihei. I heard the locals in Hana totally greet each other the same as everyone else. Even when they didn't realize we were there.
I could live in Hana. I'm totally serious! VERY low key and non-touristy for lenghty stays. Troy met a local at the tiny little convenience store who took him out on his fishing "vessel" to the tune of 1/3 the price of a "tourist" company. Adn it lasted 8 hours! It was the best part of the trip for him....especially considering he broke his ankle after we left Hana and spent the rest of his trip in a cast.
Don't get me started on the emergency room experience in Wailuku. Oy!
**I get the sarcasm/humor of this post. I think some others need to as well. lol!

I know this post is a couple months after the last, but I thought I would still reply.
The two above posters are right and wrong. Yes it is Hula (with an A) and the people here do do the hula and love it. It's our true culture. We love to surf, we welcome lots of people into the "family". We do say Aloha and Mahalo all the time. Yes, we also say hey, and Hi and hello and whats up. That "language" that you think is fake, isn't. It's very authentic. If you go into the country side, that is how they truly talk. It comes from a time when they brought in "workers" from all over Asia to work the plantation fields of sugarcane and pineapples. Of course with so many different cultures they had to find a way to talk to eachother, and out came "Pidgeon" broken English.
There are sore feelings toward "haoles" because they did force an overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. They jail the Queen in her own palace, until she signed over her kingdom. They did this by keeping Hawaiians and other non-white folks from learning the new English language, thus they couldn't open businesses, or make good amounts of money, thus not able to own land, thus not able to vote, thus the "White Man" was able to make laws that further held back local people.
Growing up in Hawaii, it really has been eye-opening. It's beautiful here it really is. But it's a bad circle. It's so expensive to live here, and we have to depend a lot of tourism. Believe me we don't "mantain our lifestyle" because of Tourism. Tourism has nothing to do with those who own the multimillion dollar homes, unless of course you own one of those hotels or attractions or the land it sits on. But usually it is Mainland companies that own all of this. We as locals don't reep many benefits. We are the ones working in these hotels for little money, and that is where we are dependent. So we need to bring in as many people to the state to "make money." And how do we do that, we build hotels and resorts on great beaches....and if tourist didn't want the mai tais we wouldn't sell them, if they didn't want the leis or the hula or any of that, we wouldn't do them... but the fact is, they do want it and they love it. So we will continue to provide it. But on the other had we provide all of this, and really what the locals want and many tourist is an untouched Hawaii. Believe me the true locals are fighting for this. The want the untouched mountains (no freeways), the open beaches (no buildings blocking the view) we want the waterfalls to stay clean, but who is making the decisions... the Man with the MONEY.
Yes, if you come to Hawaii, Oahu has the paid, business attractions. If you want untouched beauty go to Kauai maybe Maui. If you want to see volcanos go to the Big Island....that is until, the Man with the Money see the potential market gain, and starts building shopping mall, hotels and big theme parks... until then we locals will fight to keep it the way it i

First of all it is HULA (with an "A"). Secondly I really think you need to get your facts straight about what really happened in Hawaii and why they have industry taken over. In the beginning it had nothing to do with tourism, but with SUGAR. That's right folks, America's truest addiction, white sugar. Sugar companies were the first to try to "take over" Hawaii.
If you do a little bit of research about the subject you will see that your tirade is full of falsehoods.
Also, tourism is the reason these people can maintain their lifestyle and their family's well-being. Don't get it twisted...

I don't understand your post. Hawaiian language speakers DO say Aloha. And Maholo. All the time. Yes, they integrate it into English since it has been hard for them to retain fluency in their language and they are also bilingual.
You are not in a foreign country in Hawaii. You are in a place appropriated from an indigenous population that still lives there. And some of them do speak a different language.
The fact that their culture is not completely 'authentic' is because their culture has been under attack for a few hundred years.
The tourist industry has appropriated parts of that culture for tourists. That's sickening, but it's not really the effect on tourists that's the worst part of that process.
And yes, they actually do have the hulu. They tell stories through the hulu.
What Hawaii is is a place where people lived, had a language, a culture, a way of life. Then they were colonized to make a profit for other people and their culture is now ripped off to make a profit for the tourist industry. I don't know--I wouldn't have the 'Aloha spirit' if that happened to me when the place that I belong is basically being ripped up to make big ugly hotels for a bunch of tourists.

As for the other stuff, your are so right. My husband says the same stuff all the time. Locals only have the aloha spirit when money is exchanged.

People like to do and buy stupid shit no matter where they go on vacation. It's in our genes, somehow. You travel over 50 miles and suddenly you have a need to buy ugly t-shirts and screen-printed shot glasses.
Being from So Cal and speaking Spanglish, my BF could not resist creating SpangHawaiian and went around telling people "Muchas mahalos, man." It really did not go over well, but it cracked him up.

Lol! Well, all that is probably true...I'd still probably get sucked in if I ever make it to the Aloha state.
Love these goat pictures. What cuties - well, they're cute as long as they're not head-butting you...

I have it on good authority that "real" Hawaiians drink Irish coffee. Like, by the buckets.
I *know.*
Oh, and when the tourists are out of sight, they change into plaid clothing. Really. Head to toe.
I'm with you - somethin's up with that.
A.

This is slightly off topic, but still funny. Steven Colbert, who is notoriously homophobic on his show, once said, "Rainbows are God's way of frowning at gay people." Hawaii being the rainbow state and all, I thought you should know that.

Hey, here in Scranton, PA, we put on a show for tourists coming to visit the old trains and the coal mines. We cover our faces with soot and speak in Polish and Irish accents. Then we yell, "All aboard!" for people who are waiting to be seated in a restaurant.
Stumbled.

Hawaii sounds like Jamaica. I have this sneaking suspicion that they don't go around saying, "yeah, mon" at the end of every sentence, nor do they likely say, "no problem, no pressure" in response to every question.
And I am QUITE sure none of them drink Red Stripe. Mon.

I LOVE the goats of the day today!! As for Hawaii, it may not be perfect, and you may have to steer clear of the tourist traps -- but did you ever see more perfect beaches or snorkel with happier tortoises? I didn't. :)

You are on to something here. I think you should write an expose for CNN. To make sure you didn't miss something perhaps you and I should go to do some investigative reporting - 3 weeks, maybe 4. I think it's really a big Disney land. Those lava flows are piped in from a smelting plant in PA. The sea turtles are plastic. Those Mai Tai's - they don't really have any alchohol in them. Aloha and Mahi mahi wahini.
